Bobby Williams papers, 1934-2004 (bulk 1942-1948)

The collection contains Bobby Williams's papers documenting his high school and college football activities. It includes football programs and schedules, football guides, 8x10 black-and-white photographs of the Penn State football team and color photos of their 2002 and 2004 reunion, photocopies of newspaper clippings about his high school team wins, high school yearbook and commencement program, and a letter from Joe Paterno congratulating him on winning the Foothills Conference Championship in 1973.

Born in Brooklyn in 1926, Joseph Vincent Paterno had his first brush with fame in the 1940s when he and his younger brother, George, played for Brown University with Joe at quarterback and George at fullback. They led the Bruins to an 8-1 season. In 1950, Paterno decided to forego law school and give coaching a try. In 1950, Joseph V. Paterno came to Penn State as an assistant coach. Robert John "Bobby" Williams played football at David B. Oliver High School, Pittsburgh, Pa., from which he graduated in January 1942. He attended The Pennsylvania State College where he played football on the varsity team which won the 1947 Cotton Bowl championship. Williams later coached football at Greensburg Salem High School, Greensburg, Pa., 1955-1975.
